O primeiro disco de estúdio em uma década será lançado em 28 de agosto, através do selo Trojan Jamaica / BMG

Nesta sexta, o legendário artista jamaicano Frederick “Toots” Hibbert retorna com seu primeiro lançamento de estúdio em mais de uma década. “Got To Be Tough” (faixa título do disco que chega em 28 de agosto pelo selo Trojan Jamaica / BMG) é uma pedrada que chega para renovar a carreira de quase seis décadas do homem que lançou um novo som e gênero musical com seu hit de 1968 “Do The Reggay”. Sim, Toots Hibbert cunhou o termo “reggay”, que depois passou a se referir ao estilo musical, derivado do ska e do rocksteady, que surgia na Jamaica no final dos anos 60.

TROJAN JAMAICA

O selo Trojan Jamaica chega para explorar o diverso legado musical da Jamaica, desde suas raízes africanas até as infinitas inspirações vindas da música negra norte-americana como a soul music, R&B e blues. Com esse objetivo em mente, seu primeiro lançamento em julho de 2019, a coletânea Red, Gold, Green & Blue reúne estrelas como Big Youth, Mykal Rose, Andrew Tosh e Toots & The Maytals, assumindo eternas canções de nomes como Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, Willie Dixon, Fleetwood Mac, entre outros.

A gravadora BMG assinou um contrato mundial com este novo selo, que representa a música produzida atualmente na Jamaica. A BMG é co-fundadora do Trojan Jamaica, portanto, licenciou o nome do famoso selo Trojan Records, que também faz parte de seu catálogo e de onde saiu a inspiração para este novo empreendimento. Enquanto alguns dos artistas se sobrepõem ao catálogo da Trojan Records, o Trojan Jamaica é uma marca de linha de frente totalmente independente.

A história do Trojan Jamaica começou em 2016, quando Zak Starkey – conhecido por seu trabalho como baterista do The Who, Oasis, Johnny Marr and the Healers e outros grupos – e a artista e produtora australiana Sharna “Sshh” Liguz uniram-se no projeto SSHH para reinventar o hit de Bob Marley e Peter Tosh “Get Up Stand Up” ao lado de Eddie Vedder com Carlton “Santa” Davis, Goerge “Full” Fullwood e Tony Chin, estes últimos três membros da banda jamaicana Soul Syndicate. Um vídeo dessa performance chegou ao empresário jamaicano Kingsley Cooper, que convidou o SSHH para se apresentar na inauguração do Museu Peter Tosh, em Kingston, em 2016. Em seguida, a dupla se inspirou a trabalhar no que logo se chamaria Trojan Jamaica. O anúncio do selo aconteceu em fevereiro de 2019. Com distribuição global pela gravadora BMG, sua missão é apresentar ao mundo a nova música produzida na Jamaica.

FIRST STUDIO ALBUM IN A DECADE TO BE RELEASED VIA TROJAN JAMAICA/BMG ON AUGUST 28

Today, legendary Jamaican artist Frederick “Toots” Hibberts returns with his first studio release in more than a decade. ‘Got To Be Tough’ is an energizing provocation that renews the near six-decade career of the man who launched a new sound and genre with his 1968 release, “Do The Reggay.” The single comes with the welcomed news of a full-length Toots and The Maytals studio album release – of the same title as the single – set for global release via Trojan Jamaica/BMG Records on August 28.

“Got To Be Tough” is a reminder that through Toots’ creative veins run all the roots and shoots of the Black Diaspora. Blues, soul, r’n’b, funk, jazz, reggae, African griots – Toots honors, embodies and owns them. Throwing down an authoritative guide: how to survive and thrive among our earth challenges.

During a time of global social and political unrest, Toots’ welcomed return and voice couldn’t be more needed or necessary than ever. Harking back to the start of Ska, during the civil rights movement era in America and Jamaican independence in the 1960s, he has sung iconic truths such as “Monkey Man” and “54-46 Was My Number,” a wry but not bitter response to his unjust incarceration for ganja.

He hipped our heads in the 1970s with the dynamic pan-Africanism of “Funky Kingston” and the early warning message of “Pressure Drop”; re-defining soul with the “Toots In Memphis” LP in the 80s.

Toots has constantly evolved while staying uniquely the same.

Since his wrongful 1966 imprisonment – which spawned one of his biggest global hits “54-46 Was My Number” — Toots has gained insight into the corrupt systems that try to dominate our bravest endeavors, and it is in his new resistance music, that his anger at and sensitivity to injustice in 2020 is clearer than ever. Returning with a message, with no apology – a warning, as he repeats for emphasis on his latest single.

The multiple GRAMMY® Award nominated and winning musician, vocalist, songwriter, producer and icon has made the wait worthwhile, crafting a stubborn groove, designed to inspire tenacity, while splendidly balancing joy and anger, pain and healing. Produced by Toots himself, who also plays many of the instruments on this album, alongside Zak Starkey on guitar, drums from one half of Sly and Robbie, Sly Dunbar, percussion from Cyril Neville, and a mighty horn section arranged by Toots himself.

Tough though the message is, your body has to respond to these songs, and your mind will follow. An impeccable performer himself, Toots knows that the dance itself is a primal exorcism; a greater guarantee than any that, helped by heeding this warning, we will live to Do The Reggay into the 21st century and beyond.
