[:en]Favela Sounds reaches its fourth edition[:]

In 2019, Favela Sounds is divided into five blocks of activities. The first, called Ralação, is composed by workshops, were thought to train youngsters to reach jobs in the cultural market. Four professionalizing workshops will be presented, taking place between November 11th and 14th, in the following themes: DJ, beatmaking, black literature and money education for favela’s creative entrepreneurs.

The second block of the festival takes place on November 13th and 14th and is called Papo Reto. The festival enters three public schools located in high social vulnerability regions always with a special guest for a motivating conversation and pocket show. Repeating the success of 2018, the rapper and historian Preta Rara (Sao Paulo) will be responsible for these presentations, telling a little about her trajectory as a black woman, peripheral and former maid, establishing a connection with the reality lived by children and adolescents from these schools.

In its third block, Tamo Junto, held between November 12th and 14th, Favela Sounds reaches three Units of the Socio-Educational System to dialogue with young people who have committed infractions and are carrying out educational measures with or without deprivation of liberty. Rapper and educator Vera Verônika (DF) is the conductor of this activity that aims to inspire young people in their post-compliance steps.

One of the biggest news in Favela Sounds’ programme, Favela Talks will be the stage of dialogues inspired by the TED Talks. Four important characters in favela cultural market and music business are invited to share some of their life experiences, inspiring new favela musicians and creative entrepreneurs.

At its premiere, on November 15th, Favela Talks welcomes: Ana Paula Paulino (MG), an artistic producer responsible for the career of funk big names; Doralyce (PE), a known musician that shares its black woman challenges in cultural market;  the English muralist Dreph (UK), guest of the first artistic residence of the festival (held between November 1st and 15th, at the Sol Nascente slum), and Felipe Pomar (BA), a great beatmaker from Bahia that collaborates with DJs around the world. After Favela Talks, an open party will be held in the same place, programming DJ Donna (DF), TrapFunk&Alívio (BA), Djam Neguin (Cape Verde) and DJ Tyrone.

By November 16th and 17th, Favela Sounds presents its Baile (The Ball), occupying the the National Stadium with a 21-name lineup and a demonstration of some of today’s best favela music productions.

On Saturday, 16th, the Festival releases Afoxé Ogum Pá (DF), part of Ilê Axé T’oju Labá; Doralyce (PE) shows her latest álbum, Pílula Livre (2019); Amaro, a new rapper who has gained prominence in the local scene; Majur (BA), who conquered the national scene by sharing with Emicida and Pablo Vittar the vocals of the single “AmarElo”; and Alt Niss (SP), paulista rapper who launches in the city his praised album A Tua Linha.

On the same day, Favela Sounds shows Gato Preto (Mozambique/Germany) for the first time in Latin America, with the support of the Goethe-Institut. They perform an afrofruturist show, acclaimed on some of the most important stages of the world. In addition, Enme Paixão (MA), drag queen artist who brings the culture of the soundsystems of Maranhão to the LGBT pop universe; DJ Byano (RJ), creator of the Chatuba ball and resident at the Gaiola Ball, the biggest baile funk in Rio de Janeiro; and DJ Tyrone (DF) with a collection of great carioca funk standards.

Still on Saturday, Favela Sounds shows rapper Tássia Reis (SP). With over 10 years of career and having marked the production of female rap in Brazil, she launches in Brasilia her most solid work, the album Próspera (2019), praised by critics; and Shevchenko & Elloco (PE), the owners of Recife’s hit charts and with millions of views on Youtube, are one of the biggest highlights of the brega-funk movement, being unanimous at parties and balls around the country.

On Sunday, starting at 5:30 pm, the samba group 7 na Roda (DF), promotes a big roda de samba (samba wheel) to start the day in high spirits. Followed by them, Prethaís (DF), rapper of the new generation of DF and one of the founders of Casa Akotirene brings her strong and poignant lyrics to the stage. Next up is the band Tuyo (PR). With sweet voices and lyrics related to love, the group already has a large number of fans and has been demanded right in the main festivals of the country. Djam Neguin (Cape Verde) is the second international attraction of the festival. As a result of the participation of Favela Sounds in the Atlantic Music Expo (AME 2019), the artist performs for the first time in Brazil, with his dancing R&B footprint.

Bahia arrives in substantial way on the second day of the Ball, with Vandal, a veteran rapper in Salvador de Bahia’s Hip Hop; TrapFunk&Alívio, band from Northeast Amaralina (Bahia) that, as the name implies, mixes trap and funk into an energetic, high-impact show; and the contagious Dama do Pagode, one of the top names in the brand new and empowered generation of women leaders of Bahia’s pagode bands.

The Sunday also join the DJ Donna (DF), with a set of rap, R&B and afrobeat; Iasmin Turbininha (RJ), the first woman to produce 150 BPM baile funk in Rio de Janeiro and resident of the Nova Holanda favela Ball; and Black Alien (RJ), carioca rapper who releases the album Abaixo de Zero: Hello Hell, nominated by audience and specialized critics as the album of the year 2019 and winner of the Multishow Award in the same category. With a revamped show and alongside the beats created by producer Papatinho, Black Alien brings on stage songs that tell about his difficult relationship with drugs and his overcoming of following in the art and living on rap, despite all the challenges faced.

Since 2018, Favela Sounds presents a representative lineup that values ​​gender equity, with at least 50% female attractions. In addition, the festival reinforces its commitment to plurality and diversity by casting important LGBT voices in its programme.

Another important festival’s important affirmative action is the free shuttle to the concert’s days. On Saturday and Sunday, Favela Sounds offers the audience buses departing from different favelas of DF to the National Stadium, returning to the same locations after all.

All festival activities are free-admissional. Registration for workshops and Favela Talks are opened and available on the festival website. Admission to the Ball is free on two days until 9pm. After this time, the entrance will be by donating 1kg of food. Activities in public schools and the Socio-Educational System are exclusive to their internal audiences.

Accomplished by Um Nome Produção e Comunicação and co-accomplished by Women’s Secretariat, Youth Secretariat, Sports Secretariat, Secretariat of Justice and Secretary of Culture of the Federal District, the festival is sponsored by Oi and Skol Puro Malte and supported by Oi Futuro, Pontes, British Council, Goethe-Institut, Sicoob, Spotify and CMA Advogados.  This project is carried out with funds from the Local Incentive Culture Law.

More about Favela Sounds’ first international artistic residence
In 2019, Favela Sounds presents its first artistic residence with the English artist Dreph. He arrives in the Federal District for 15 days of activities with young graffiti artists from Sol Nascente favela and residents of other highly socially vulnerable regions of the DF, sponsored by Brtish Council and Oi Futuro.

A leading name in urban art in London, Neequaye Dreph Dsane maintained extensive research on identity, migrations, race and diáspora for decades, transmuted into large painted panels on the streets of Brixton and other neighborhoods of the city, depicting figures of great responsibility in the history of human displacement in English territory, giving these characters the deserved recognition for their struggles for the migrant population. The “Prefixo Favela” residence is divided into research process, presentation, technical classes, dialogues with the community, collective painting of public works in the Sol Nascente favela and sharing the results of the activity in debates promoted by the artist.

The idea is that Dreph and a group of young graffiti artists from all over the DF to be selected by inscription (besides young people interested in graffiti art, residents of the favela), conducts research and collective meetings with the first explorers of the territories that generated the community. Subsequently, the artist and students will paint the faces of the first inhabitants of the favela in facades indicated by the local residents’ association, in a rescue of the collective memory that aims at enhancing peripheral trajectories.
